Spoiling myself and the Unexpected Gift
Today will be a day I remember for the rest of my life. My wife and I are in Las Vegas, Nevada for a company event this weekend. With a little free time this morning I decided to spoil myself, make a dream of mine come true, and spend an amazing day with my spouse, all at the same time. How you may ask? I rented a McClaren MP4-12C.
Now you don’t have to be familiar with exotic cars to know the names Lamborghini and Ferrari are synonymous with fast. You may not be an avid Formula 1 fan like myself (McClaren Mercedes is my team), but the McClaren is in the same class with its more famous cousins, so when I found out it was available, I had to drive it.
From the moment I pressed the gas pedal my life began to change. For the remainder of the day, I was a star, famous with a fast car. The first stop light someone asked if they could take my picture. And the performance was beyond description; the words I would use to try to convey the sheer feeling of raw power could never do the experience justice. I was smiling from ear to ear for 6 hours. I could not image a more perfect way to spend the afternoon with my wife or a better method to experience the amazing terrain around Las Vegas.
An amazing driving experience was what I was paying for; being able to touch dozens of people’s lives was the gift I got for free. What I learned today is exotic cars get noticed. From the exhaust note, the bright orange paint, to the gull – wing doors, no matter what you do, you are going to get attention. And everyone greets you with a smile. There is a certain wow factor with a $300,000 automobile. So, with every wave, comment, or honk I greeted my new friends with a smile. People were walking across parking lots and waving me down in the street just to get a picture of “my” car. When I was stopped by the Hoover Dam I let a couple tourists sit in the car and I took their picture, and one Germany guy was so happy he proclaimed “You made my day!”, with a smile so wide it looked like he might start to cry. The joy that car brought to everyone who saw it and shared it with me was a surprising gift. It was one of those priceless memories one could never seek nor buy, and I will be forever grateful and humble for receiving it.

Now, this post was never intended to be about cars. It was about spoiling yourself and making your dreams come true, and you never know, sometimes the reward is far beyond what you had anticipated.
